Workshops at Shop Handmade

We have just announced our first few workshops for February 2012.

Bookings are now open.

Workshop 1. A stitch sampler to teach basic sewing skills.

A 2 hour workshop, $40 cost and all products will be provided.
Your finished work will give you a lovely stitched sampler to frame or hang and the skills
to sew on a button and do decorative stitches etc.

Workshop 2. Is a lovely cross stitch piece

Once finished you can make into a cushion, hang in a frame etc.
A 2 hour workshop, $40, all products will be provided.
Your finished piece will provide you with the skills to cross stitch other items
and basic sewing and finishing skills.

Shop Handmade will re open Monday 16th January.

In the same beautiful location in City Walk, Casino end, Canberra

Shop Handmade is now twice the size.

Packed full with gorgeous designer wares in every corner,
on every shelf and even hanging from the ceiling.

We also have a new "Creative Space" to hold workshops.
Shop will also offer fabrics, kits and ribbons.

I know we are still on holidays but we thought you might like this!

SH now also offers providers of "Craft Enabling", CE, products to be part of SH, these would include ribbons, buttons, tapes, packaging & fabrics etc. These items do not have to be handmade but must allow people to make something from them. If they are handmade then all the better.
These items can be offered in bulk, by the meter or even in kit form, it is up to you.The CE products will be an essential part of our new workshop space.

It’s Almost Christmas and Handmade Canberra is bursting with gorgeous Handmade gift ideas
in the Nation’s Capital.

The two day Mega Market will coincide with Shop Handmade, only two minutes walk away, being open all weekend for all your Christmas Shopping.
Handmade Canberra will be holding their Christmas Market on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 December, from 10am to 4pm at the National Convention Centre (NCC), this enormous market will be a Christmas shopper’s dream, with new designers each day.
The market will feature wide shopping isles, comfy couches and coffee and even the days newspaper to read!

Meet the designer: Sophie Cooper from funky label Scoops Designs

Sophie Cooper from Scoops Designs is one clever lady. She's a graphic designer with a penchant for perspex. She also uses mediums like wood, material and paper to create very cool jewelery, cushions, decals, gift cards and gift tags, and a gorgeous range of Christmas decorations. Sophie gives us the scoop (pardon the pun) on the woman behind the label.

What makes Scoops unique?
Scoops Designs is about my love for everything bright and colourful. I want to add colour and design into peoples lives whether that be through a brooch or a cute cushion or mirrors on the wall. I try to make everything affordable, well designed and individual.

Describe your style in three words: Cute, colourful and fun.

How did you come up with your illustrative style and characters?
I have been drawing since I was little, so a lot of these characters I have developed since childhood. I was a 70's child and grew up with Miffy and Marimekko so these have been huge influences in my life, especially colour wise. I don't think my style has changed since I was 3!

Where/how are your products made?
I have my own laser cutter so I design and cut all of the brooches, decorations and mirrors from my workshop in Sydney. My background is in graphic design, so I also design all my packaging which I get printed locally. I also do a lot of the sewing for the baby clothes and cushions.

What special things have you got in your range for Christmas?
There are lots of Christmas decorations: reindeer, doves, snowflakes and stars available in recycled wood and perspex, Christmas gift tags (in packs of 6 and 10) and Christmas Cards (individual and packs of 4). The Christmas decorations are great, reasonable priced gifts for all ages! There is also a new range of perspex and wood brooches, shatterproof mirrors and cushions.

Handmade supports Bosom Buddies ACT

Bosom Buddies assists ACT women going through the difficult journey of living with breast cancer and Handmade is very proud to support their great work.

Run entirely by dedicated volunteers, Bosom Buddies visits women in hospital, runs workshops about living with cancer, helps women network with others and educates the community about breast cancer.

To do this work they rely on fundraising initiatives and Handmade recently pitched in and supported their hat making competition called Hat Hat Hooray. Ranging from fun felt creations to classic race ware adorned with feathers, the entries were displayed and judged at our last Handmade Market on the 2nd of October (see the pic below). If you missed seeing them you can take a peek at the winners by clicking here to go to the Bosom Buddies website.

Local politicians and media personalities were also asked to show some creative flair by making a hat to auction off and the good news is you still have a chance to bid your way to owning one of these very one-off creations!

Ah… Christmas is (almost) in the air. I suspect, however, that “sweet scent” I smell is not so sweet after all, but is actually the sweaty smell of fear and desperation.
Relax! No longer need you be the sender of the dud Christmas card, the card that, when it falls off the venetian blinds, just gets left there all curled up and covered in dust.
Christmas happens to be our favourite seasonal time here at Look Mama! and we feel it only right to share our fun. We’re good like that.
It’s a well known fact I’m not a fan of namby pamby anything, greeting cards in particular. It’s fair to say nearly all our cards offer a slightly different take on the Christmas themes, from a Santa who has heard one too many breathlessly excited children blather on (and on and on) to some sage advice for those at the office Christmas party. We really wanted to run a list of unrecommendable practices down the side of that card but there were way too many and the card would have been three feet long.

We encourage you all to lighten up, have a bit of a laugh and enjoy yourselves … and to help towards that end, our Christmas single cards range remains discounted at $2.00AU. You can mix and match or take advantage of the bulk lots of cards on offer which get you 12 cards for the price of 10. The bulk lots are listed towards the end of the Christmas section.
I know, I know, postage is a bit of a big fat unavoidable bugbear, which is partly why we made the cards so cheap. Never fear, a couple of surprise extras go in to soften the blow.

Guest Post: How to Price Your Wares Correctly

IF YOU ARE A CUSTOMER OR A SMALL BUSINESS OWNER, THIS POST IS FOR YOU.

[update and disclaimer] This post has received a lot of feedback in the comments section which is great! I'm glad we're all talking about this difficult topic. But I do want to add - this formula wasn't meant to be perscriptive, merely a guide. Adapt it to suit your situation. I've added more comments below in red :)
It's crazy how often the topic of pricing comes up in conversation around here.

- It might be triggered by our frustrations with a comment on a blog about how such-and-such beautiful, bespoke, handmade item is 'too expensive'.

- We might be throwing around business ideas & offering advice to a intern or friend who wants to start a small business.

- Or we might be discussing a new venture for our own business (such as Inklet), trying to figure out if a product is actually viable to produce and sell at a reasonable price.

The thing is, pricing yourself correctly is HARD. there are so many things working against you when you're a small, local business trying to sell your wares. Like the fact that 99% of the products in your marketplace are manufactured overseas with poor ethical & enviromental standards and sold at a price that you'll never be able to match. And the fact that in your own community there are people who will operate at a loss on a hobby basis because they don't depend on the income from the business. And because people as whole have a mindset that cheaper is better and haven't been educated about the 'real cost' of their purchase.

Since the very beginning, we've always tried to price our textiles correctly. If it wasn't for the wonderful book Craft Inc., we might never have known about The Formula (as we have dubbed it), and by now we would have worked ourselves into the ground.

But fortunately we did know about The Formula (said with a reverent tone) and would like to share it with you today:

What do you reckon? Sounds pretty full on, huh? All those x2's! Well let me tell you, those x2's are there for a reason and without them we wouldn't be here writing this post to you today.

Let's break it down:

Cost price

Your cost price is the cost of your time (or someone else's) plus the cost of your materials.

Time cost

If you're doing the work yourself you need to pay yourself an hourly rate. We calculated our rate based on what we'd have to pay someone else to do the job for us. Because if we got bigger, that's what we'd have to do. Make it a realistic figure. For us it's $20per hour. You might be able to work to a lesser figure, that's fine. If you outsource, remember to factor in any time you need to spend liaising with or managing your makers.

Material costs

These are your direct material costs, not equipment or setup. For example, we factor in the cost of our basecloth, our inks and our heat setting, but not the screen exposure.

Wholesale price

Your wholesale price is your cost price, doubled. Why double it? Because you need to cover all your overheads! Your rent, electricity, equipment, etc etc etc. If you were paying someone else for their labor then you'd be making nothing for yourself if you didn't mark up the price. Update - double might not work for everyone, everyone's overheads are different, but the important point is that you need *some* markup here. If you material costs are very high then double might be extreme, though it's important to remember that high material costs come with high investment and risk, which you should be covering yourself for.

Retail price

Finally, your retail price is your wholesale price, doubled. Again, why doubled? Because retailers will typically need to mark your goods up by 100%. That sounds extreme, but a retailer also has all of their overheads to cover, plus they have to factor in losses from goods that don't sell. Update - 100% is the standard for *our* industry. If your industry has a standard markup of say, 50%, then you can work to that. Do your research and find out.

The important thing to note is, you need to sell at the retail price (or close to it) in your online shop and at markets. Even if you don't wholesale yet. For three reasons:

1) Because when the time comes to start wholesaling your goods, you can't be undercutting your wholesale customers.

2) Because there are additional overheads involved in playing the role of retailer yourself - packaging costs, shop fees, time to photograph & list items, market stall fees etc etc.

3) Because you're potentially doing the rest of the handmade industry a disservice if you don't.

That last point is a crucial one. And a tough topic. On the one hand, it's important to acknowledge that not everyone can launch into their small business selling at a 'proper' retail price. And one could argue that it's those stallholders with more affordable handmade items that help keep our handmade marketplace a thriving and dynamic one. But on the flip side, other businesses who have set their prices at a sustainable level aren't able to compete. For example, a fully lined zip purse made from our fabric with the above formula would need to be sold for around $35. How often do you see these being sold at markets for $15 or less?

One last thing

Whilst we're here, let's just take a moment to reflect on how the above formula applies to a $15 t-shirt from a large chain store. Considering that some large retailers have markups of 200 or 300%, how much did the person who sewed that garment get paid? Society seems to be more educated about battery hens than their human counterpart.

We hope this post has shed some light for both customers and other business owners alike. We figure if we're going to selling fabric for $96 a metre and t-shirts for $45 then it's important for you to understand where those figures came from. And we hope you'll think about this post when you next think of someone's wares as being 'too expensive', or when you find you next 'bargain' in the stores.

Meet the talented creator of Children's ware label 'Thames Child'

Penny Bevan created her label of beautiful children's clothing way back in 1999. Penny is still inspired to make traditional boys, girls and baby's clothes using fine quality fabrics. Lots of love goes into every garment and Penny shares with us what inspires her and keeps Thames Child thriving.

How was your label Thames Child born and how long have you been operating?
The name Thames Child came from my two sons very English names of Thomas and James, however I have since had a daughter Sarah. I wanted a name that reflected my classic styles and had a personal significance.

Where are you based?
I have been operating predominantly through markets for twelve years but am currently increasing my online presence. You can contact me at http://thameschild.com.au/thames/Home.html (it will be updated within the next month).

What sets Thames Child apart from the rest?
Thames provides a service that is unavailable in the commercial stores and that is a more traditional range of clothing that ignores the fashion trends and gives people a legitimate and quality alternative to the mass produced styles that are readily available. This enables the discerning buyer to be more exclusive thereby providing an alternative choice in children's clothing.

What do you love about what you do?
I have always had a passion for handmade and for children. I love being able to develop an idea from a piece of fabric, to a sketch and then to see a child in a finished garment.

How did you learn the skills required for designing, making and selling your line?
My mother is a beautiful dressmaker and I learnt a lot from her. As a child I spent many happy hours designing and making various creations from my mother's scrap fabrics, laces and buttons. Sewing has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. Since leaving school I have completed several courses in design and fabric manipulation.

What's the best and hardest things about having your own business?
Flexible hours and being available for my family are the best things. The hardest is there are never enough hours in a day!

Besides the fact the the weather was gorgeous, coffee abundant and goodie bags from Garnier we also got to see Rachael Finch in THAT dress. Stunning, just stunning.

We are super excited about Handmade Canberra's very first involvement in...

Floriade!

Yes, that's right - A Taste of Handmade Canberra will be in the Trader Village for the entire duration of Floriade - from Saturday 17 September, right through to Sunday 16 October, 9am to 5pm, at Commonwealth Park.

For the first time ever, Handmade will host a rotating stall of weekly designers, and we will update you on who's who, each week of the festival.

Designers included in Week One will be Lindsay & Edmunds Organic Chocolate, KaiKai sterling silver jewellery, Cheryl Hodges Botanical Art, La Ruche Designs, The Cherry Tree, Nullabour Nights merino clothing, and Tick Tock Type recycled typewriter key jewellery.

I will also be on hand to sign copies of the absolutely gorgeous handmade living (as well as my Riley children's book series), so come and say hello and have your book signed on Tuesday 20, Wednesday 21 and Thursday 22 September, before perusing the other stunning wares on show.

You will love it all!

Floriade's theme this year is A Feast for the Senses. It is the largest flower festival in the Southern Hemisphere. Hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over the world descend on Canberra like honeybees to take in the splendour. Check the website for more details on how you can attend.

With all the sun we've been getting in Canberra the tulips and daffodils are poking up their pretty heads to say hello. And that means Australia's premier flower festival, Floriade, is just around the corner, kicking off on Saturday September 17.

With over 1 million bulbs and annuals and a full program of entertainment and some great food and market stalls, Floriade is a delight for all the senses.

This year also marks the debut of "A Taste of Handmade Canberra" at Floriade, featuring new designers each week in our own Handmade marquee. Meet the Designer: H for Handbag

We're delighted to welcome the lovely Clare Incher of H for Handbag with this fascinating peek into her designer life.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I was born in Pontrhydyfen, the same South Wales village as Richard Burton, and I went to the same school as Anthony Hopkins! That’s my claim to fame!

After a very creative childhood of mudpies, making my own clothes and a quirky off beat eye for fashion. I went to Winchester School of Art and graduated with a BA Hons in Fine Art Textiles.

I have been designing handbags for 13 years and will never get sick of it. I worked in London for 5 years and it was a wonderful time sipping cocktails and wearing clippy cloppy shoes, but I was lacking something ‘real’ in my life, so I decided to come on holiday to visit my family in Australia... and then a whole wave of wonderful things started to happen.

That was 7 years ago! In that time...I have fallen in-love, set up my business, got married, became a step-mummy, had two children, became Australian and bought a house – Phew!

What inspired your business name?

When I was thinking of a business name, I wanted something that summed up my business in its entirety. I was totally consumed with it for weeks when one day, I was reading a book to my step-son Toby, who was 2 years old at the time... A is for Apple, B is for Ball and then I thought... well H is for Handbag! I cropped it down to ‘H for Handbag’ and there you have it.

How long have you been in operation?

I started the business in 2006, two years after I arrived in Australia.

What inspired your business?

Well, this is a two-pronged answer. Firstly, I have worked for many High street stores in the UK such as such as Topshop, Next, Jane Norman, Oasis, River Island and was the product developer in Sydney for Oroton Brand - Marc's Womens' & Mens' accessories and Babydoll, I have also designed for Mimco, a Melbourne Brand. I realised that the current higher-end brands on offer are not as accessible to the average woman as these companies wish to believe, and I set up my business as a reaction to this.

Secondly, being a handbag designer is just so in my blood, I just LOVE it and when I moved from Sydney, to be with my fiancé in Canberra, I realised that I wasn’t going to be able to be a handbag designer anymore, as all the head offices are in the bigger cities – Sydney & Melbourne, so I thought then was the right time to start my own business and take the plunge!

In a nutshell, what exactly do you create?

I design appealing, off-beat, individual bags that are practical and affordable. Every handbag has that little something extra designed into it – bright linings, hidden pockets and comfortable straps. Hence the logo “Chic, Unique and a little bit Wicked!”

What inspires you?

Sometimes I find a great fabric and the design starts there, maybe I like a shape or strap detail. I am always researching new trends, new styles and new fabrics. I have a sixth sense when researching and I am able to predict which catwalk trend will be a one-hit wonder or have longevity. I choose elements to feature in my styles that are more classical and can last the distance, so that they never look old or outdated.

One of the major things that I don’t design is ‘boring, black handbags’ I cant do it, it’s not in my nature. An accessory is an extension of your personality and it’s a great way of expressing how individual you are. All my handbags are bright and fun, even the black handbags have beautiful vivid linings – I just cant help it. I LOVE colour!

Tell us about your latest venture.

Well, this is the exciting bit. After having a bit of a break to give my babies some ‘Mummy-time’ I was able to look at my business objectively, I wanted a new direction to fit in and work around my new life with children, and so I have decided to create a wonderful world of “Girls night in” parties.

This is where I will come to your house, work or designated venue and set up the current range with all my new and exciting products on display. I’ll explain all the features and benefits of each bag – with lots of party games and prizes in-between and then I stand back and watch all the lovely ladies fight over who gets what – it’s great!

All my bags are at great price points, as I don’t have any over heads to factor in, and they are all limited editions, as I am able to lock-in small production runs. This in-turn is great for the customer as they get exclusive bags and I can provide fresh new styles monthly!

Can you share any tips about starting a small business or being a designer?

You have got to keep looking at your business objectively and steer it on the path you intend it to travel on. You must make time to 'work on' your business not just 'work in' it. I am totally ‘the glass is half full’ kinda gal. I believe that you hold the power to your success and failure.

You have to have a plan for your business and believe it totally from the inside, and project it outwards. Have goals and strive towards them, this is a good project to do with your own life too. If you don’t know where you are going, you are going to go nowhere.

What do you like most about being a Handmade Canberra designer?

The community. It’s just a wonderfully supportive and inspiring environment. It’s just what Canberra has been needing for years and it is thriving from it.

Besides yourself, who is your favourite Handmade Canberra designer?

Electric firefly. I just love the simplicity of the designs. They have elements in them that really speak to me – retro, ingenious and really effective. We have three of their products in our house and always want more when they bring out new styles. There is nothing I don’t like about their range.

Describe your perfect designing day.

I have 3 very young pixies, I don’t get to have a full day doing anything, let alone designing! I don’t tend to work in that way anyway. I don’t design my ranges all in one go, I come up with an idea, and work on it for a few weeks – I do a lot of it actually in my head and once I think I have something special, I sit down and sketch it up in the evenings once the kids are asleep.

I get a few prototypes made up and tweak them, once I am happy I send it into production. This way there is always something fresh and new either in the pipeline or just arrived. For me this is a great way of working especially as my business is not my only job... I am a wife and a mother too ; )

Tell us a little bit about yourself.
Eight years ago we moved our young family from the USA back to Australia. The move prompted me to consider a career change, and I was eager to run my own company. When my friends introduced me to someone looking for a business partner in a handbag company I jumped at the chance. Three months later, we dissolved our partnership and I took over as owner of bragbags australia.

Prior to my business, I was a corporate account software executive. I lived in the USA for 10 years, and worked in several computer companies and loved it. However, with the decision to move back to Australia to raise our kids, I thought it might be time for a change.

So the inspiration for my business was, really, to be a business owner!

How long have you been in operation?
Eight years.

Tell us about your bags.
We create handbags for the woman who enjoys her individuality, wants to feel a sense of connection to the things around her and wants to know about the story behind the product.

Our 'Organised Chaos' range was launched 18 months ago, and continues to grow. It includes:

handbag organisers to keep you organised, and to help you quickly change bags
bag, jewellery and scarf hangers for your boudoir
travel items including family passport holders, Splash swimsuit bags, electronics bag, toiletries and jewellery travel purse

What inspires you to create?
Our customers! They are loyal and are definitely our inspiration. They aren't shy in providing us with feedback, and we love them for it. So it is a great relationship.

Tell us about your latest product or venture.
I'm excited about our custom corporate division that is growing slowly but surely. Our two recent ventures have included a lovely linen wine bag for a national new winebar and a cosmetic pouch for a local skincare range who are launching a new Doctor's office range.

I love working directly with the customer to meet their needs for something above the ordinary. One project we worked on last year was to create beautiful hand-stitched A4 sized bags for a women's breakfast.

Can you share any tips about starting a small business or being a designer? Because of my background, I focus a lot on the business outcome. I ask myself if the activity is revenue-generating or not, and it helps me prioritise and focus. Unfortunately it does mean there is a huge backlog of filing and other tasks that don't get completed!

I also ask my customers lots of questions, and listen to what they say. Often I'll incorporate a new idea or a customer-suggested modification into the next product range.

Describe your perfect designing day. I have hired a part-time designer for my business, as I think it is so much better to work on design together. My designer is much younger than me and I enjoy the difference in our likes and dislikes.

Working together means there is a lot of discussion, and sometimes it feels like we spend a long time and don't accomplish very much. So my (our) perfect designing day is when we can agree on a handbag style, size, colour(s), fabric and all the other details!

What do you like most about being a Handmade Canberra designer?
We get to have a little bit of Perth showcased in Canberra. I love the idea of our products being used and loved outside Perth.

My name is Tania Scott and I'm a 'normal' 42-year-old mother to four gorgeous girls, Mackenzie (10), Monae (8), Alexandra (7) and Emmerson (5).

I live in Albury, New South Wales, with my partner Noel, a dog named Henry and a cat that we saved at Christmas named Christmas Eve, or as we call her Evie.

I have had a wonderful life I have travelled, lived and worked all over the world and had a hoot of a time. That all changed when our girls came along and we moved back to Albury where I grew up and where my family are.

May 2010 my world changed, I had to have some really bad skin cancers removed from my face, a large one on my nose which needed a skin graft from my ear. I made a joke of it and said the doctors where going to put my ear on my nose, so I would be able to hear with my nose.

The other one was on my forehead - it was more serious, a little red itchy dot. Well, on the surface that was what it was. It had spread. At one stage, my tummy was going to be on my forehead. You can imagine the jokes I made about that. Anyway, the wonderful doctors in Melbourne did what they do best. All clear, but I still have to keep a very close eye on any changes to my skin.

This is when my life changed... I decided to do what I love. I found a whole new life in the gorgeous world of fabrics, feathers, flowers and embellishment. This was when 'The Fabric Florist' was created I could disappear for hours into my gorgeous world to create and heal, as I had this time for me.

The Fabric Florist is a big part of my life now. It has opened so many doors for me and I have met so many gorgeous people. I run this special part of my life from home, around my girls, and it works really well for our family.

My business is always changing and growing. What started as gorgeous hair pieces for my girls and their friends slowly moved to markets to retail and very my own gorgeous online store.

When I look back at my designs, they too have grown with me. I create gorgeous unique fabric blooms especially designed for weddings and race days. Each individually designed piece is handmade from stunning fabrics, feathers and embellishments. I take my inspiration from Mother Nature. I love to mix textures and colours.

My designs are stylish, elegant, quirky, unique and too gorgeous.

I love being a part of Shop Handmade. This is such a gorgeous shop filled with a mix of many gorgeous designers - something for everyone. It is a wonderful way for me to share my designs with others. The ladies do such a beautiful job of displaying the designs.

I was over the moon after being invited to appear on a discussion panel at the NAB National Small Business Summit 2011 hosted by The Council Of Small Business Of Australia (COSBOA) in Sydney on Wed 27 July 2011 by the super talented Debra Templar from The Templar Group.

The aims of the Summit are in this summary from the website:

OK have you heard the news? Handmade Market is going Country.

We have so many people asking us if we can come to their town or city with Handmade Market or Shop Handmade. Not that we don't want to spread the love we just believe that we know our own back yard best! So in a compromise of spreading our wings and not going to far a field we have come up with Handmade Country Market.

Not just one, but two great locations, Bowral & Young. Bowral will be a regular bi Monthly market starting in September 2011and Young will be annual during their amazing Cherry Festival 2011.

Handmade Country Market, Bowral will be the first time the market has been hosted outside of Canberra and promises to be a fantastic inclusion to the regular calendar of events at The International Cricket Hall of Fame. The Handmade Country Markets will be held at Glebe Park, Bowral, on the fourth Saturday of every other month from 10am to 3pm starting from September 2011. Special parking areas will be set up offsite with a free shuttle bus operating all day to and from the market. A gold coin donation will support the Bradman Foundation.

The International Cricket Hall of Fame is one of Bowral region flagship tourist attraction. Guest Post: The Business of Art: Part IV: Marketing and Self-Promotion

When it comes to marketing and self-promotion, there are many thoughts that race through my head relating to the specific topic of marketing, even more precisely 'self promotion'. Not just online through social media networks, but real life face to face communication. Most of my sales come through face to face interactions which I am really happy about, as I love meeting new people, engaging in inspiring conversations and building relationships. So I thought I'd share with you how I enable this to happen.

It's a long post so make yourself a cuppa, get comfortable and read on!

Marketing is such a broad topic that spans over many facets of a business but as micro business owners one of the most difficult things I think we are faced with is the fear of talking about what we do to others, as we do not want to come across as trying to sell our wares to everyone we meet. In saying that though running a micro business often means limited funds and promoting your business can be very costly... so mastering the art of self promotion can be a valuable asset.

As can getting over being camera shy... for years I've preferred to be behind the camera rather than in front of it... but I pushed myself to get over that fear.

Back to promoting your business, there are many ways to promote a business... paid advertising is NOT the only form. So I'd like to share with you five ideas that I have found to be invaluable.

1. Use your own products:
Firstly, if you yourself do not love your wares then how can you expect others to? By using your own wares you also demonstrate to others how they too could use them.

I wear my brooches often, actually I made and wore them before I even started selling them. The number of compliments I received about my brooches and the questions like 'where did you buy it' or 'do you sell them' quickly brought to my attention there was a market for them out there. I also use my own little cases and eco-sacks daily and have just as many conversations started about my work because of them.

By wearing/using your own wares you have the opportunity to talk to prospective retailers/customers without feeling like you're are pushing your product onto them... if they are attracted to them then they will open the conversation. Plus, it's really good practice for getting used to talking about your products. You don't always have to tell them you made it, there are times when I simply smile and say; 'thank you'... and keep a mental note of who it was that commented on it, where they worked (if it was in their work place), their age etc.

Because items like my brooches and cases are exposed to people outside my circle of friends keeping note of who is attracted them helps me understand who is drawn to my work. If your product cannot be easily carried around with you then perhaps the next point will help you.

2. Test the market place through gift giving:

As a photographer I'd often give a portrait session as a gift (or donate it to a charity event) as it not only gave someone the chance to have their portrait taken for free but it gave me the opportunity to hone in on my skills and master my craft, while building my reputation as a professional.

In my current business I have found giving gifts to people whom I have thought to be in my target market an invaluable form of research. Aside from the fact that the recipient receives a unique gift (sometimes made to suit them specifically) in your signature style... you in turn get to observe how they react to, engage with, and use the gift. Which is a great form of research. This can assist you in honing in on who your target market 'really' is and understand who 'really' values the type of work you do, and 'why'?

Plus it is a great way of having your products get out into the big wide world without spending thousands of dollars on advertising that may or MAY NOT reach your ideal market.

3. Celebrate your achievements with your family and friends:

I used to be really shy when it came to this, when I won awards for my photography and was given the status of 'Associate Member' in the Australian Institute of Professional Photographers after only three years of being a member I did not really want to tell anyone as I did not want to appear to be 'bragging'... in fact I did not think much of my awards at the time, I thought anyone could get them. But then meeting other great photographers in the industry that had been photographing for a lot longer than me who had not received any awards made me realise they were not that easy to obtain.

But then I started thinking about family and friends that have received a promotion in their job and have shared this information at social gatherings without hesitation. They were excited about being rewarded for their work. As a micro business owner you work very hard for your rewards so reaching your goals should be celebrated and shared, without shame or guilt.

I'm not just talking about receiving industry awards, I am talking about even the simplest of goals being met. Having your work selected to be in your favourite store in a funky part of town. Having someone approach you about stocking your wares in their store... meaning you did not even have to chase the work. These are little bits of conversation that add credibility to what you as a an artist/designer/crafter (micro business owner) are doing. You are not merely a hobbyist, you too are part of the workforce.

When I first started this business I did so using printed fabrics by other designers, but as soon as I was able and ready to, I started using my own printed designs in my own colours (which was a huge thing for me). I was so excited that I decided to host a party. A preview event of my new collection. I invited friends that showed interest in my work. Set up a display of my new collection, served champagne, canapés and gave everyone attending a little thank you gift (one of my little cases). It was a fantastic way to get instant feedback and have a social gathering... but most of all to share my excitement with people that were also excited about what I had been working on. From there the conversation started flowing as they too spoke to others about the event and my products, and I had other people tell me "I heard about you and your work through such and such, they were at your preview event".

Word of mouth is a beautiful thing.

4. Put yourself in your work and share your story:

This may sound cliché. But honestly, doing what you 'love' will show through in your work. If you make something just because you think it might 'sell well' then you are only creating hard work for yourself. It's hard to speak passionately about something if you are really not that passionate about it.

The people in my target market (and I am guessing yours too) love the story behind the work they are buying they are not just captured by the item or product, but the passion and effort that has gone into creating it, and that a part of the creator has gone into each piece. When they talk to others about the item/s that they have bought, they will not only describe how it's used and where they bought it, they will also talk about the story of the maker/creator, interesting points about their lifestyle or production process... but you need to give them a story to tell.

So share your passion through your work and you will give customers something to talk about, then they too will sell your work for you.

5. Try to understand who is attracted to your work and why:

There is material out there that says work out who you wish to market to and aim at them... which makes sense. But, when you are an artisan and you do something unique it can be difficult to know who would actually like your work so I've tried a slightly different approach. And that is to try and understand who it is that is attracted to my type of work. The ideas laid out above all help with this. Observing, mental note taking and listening to what people talk about when they talk about products. Do they focus on price or the experience they had when they purchased it.

It's easy to make the mistake in thinking that the people who will buy your work will be just like you... if they are just like you then wouldn't they be making these things themselves? Some of my recurring customers are artists/designers/crafters who like to buy the work of other artisans (I myself do that). But all of those artisans are not exactly like me, and, not all my customers are artisans. However, all my customers do appreciate the art of something being created uniquely, passionately, beautifully.

Just be YOU... and believe in YOURSELF! And talking about your work (what you are passionate about) will not be so frightening. Enjoy!

(Yes, I know Borders went bust, it was not because of this, I assure you!).

Facebook – linked, maintained, engaged, authentic (plenty of contributions from users, plenty of real testimonials, 2-way dialogue)

Online sales. The website has plenty of invitations to ‘buy now’. The product is easy to ship. Both wholesale and retail purchasing is available.

This product is the ultimate case study in Marketing 101. Samantha is to be congratulated for taking a great idea and running with it.. and running.. and running.

Guest Post: The Business of Art: Part III: Record Keeping

Financial record keeping is not my favourite past time, but NOT being aware of my money situation is something I dislike even more.

When I did my formal studies in Visual Arts and Design I learnt about a range of fine art and design techniques: ceramics, painting, printmaking, drawing, metal work, wood work, technical drawing, some video editing and a little graphic design along with theory like the history of art etc... but NOTHING about HOW TO earn an income through on my art... let alone run a business. Which is why I am quite passionate about this now.

There is SO MUCH that I learnt through trial and error, making lots of mistakes and having taken some unsuccessful risks in my first business as photographer. I was not the financial record keeper, I was merely the creative brains behind the business... and I was very happy about that. I HATED talking about packages, pricing, money!

BUT, there came a time when I finally decided I too needed to KNOW what was going on financially. And I am so glad I did, as it has allowed me to start this business with more of an understanding of how to keep track of finances without it being so overwhelming.
Lets face it, as a micro business you may not be able to afford an accountant from the start, but once you can how good would it feel to know you have some idea of what they are talking about or asking for when you meet with them.

Here are three simple but effective tips on keeping track of your money. They have worked for me, but may not be for everyone... the key is finding what works for you, sticking to it, keeping up with it and building on it once your confidence grows.

(i) Keep business receipts in a separate place to personal receipts. (I use one of my little linen cases and have it in my bag at all times.) I know this sounds super simple but it makes such a difference and much less of a drama finding them and sorting through them when it comes time to enter them. I have even set up folders on my computer in financial years and months so I can save invoices that I get via email into the appropriate folder straight away.

(ii) Schedule one day a month in your diary for record keeping. I call mine 'MONEY DAY' a very valuable tip and term I picked up from Monica Davidson when I did her course on Freelance Sucess. You may not need a full day, I don't get full days but just knowing that the focus for that day is finances is enough to prepare me mentally. On 'money day' I do the following: (today is my money day in fact).
• enter receipts.
• enter sales tracking info.
• update my cashflow spread sheet ensuring future bills are entered.
• pay myself.
• plan future purchases like fabric orders, buttons, equipment, subscriptions, promotional expenses etc.

By doing this every month when it comes time to you needing to do BAS statements etc, it will not be such a mammoth task.

(iii) Set up a simple cash flow spreadsheet that tells you how much money you have in the bank, enter amounts for bills that you can be sure will come up, be it, weekly, monthly, annually. Even if this is all you do at least you will know what you have to work with when it comes to wanting to make purchases. My cash flow sheet simply has the following columns:
• Date
• Category (eg. Admin Expenses: Travel, Selling Expenses: Advertising, Revenue: Sales, Revenue: Personal Injection)
• Description (eg. Shop Handmade: Aug Sales)
• Credit/Debit (ie. the dollar value)
• Balance (a simple formula calculating what the balance is after each entry/transaction)
Over time I have expanded my record keeping into two main workbooks with several pages per workbook, with things like stockists, sales tracking, fabric and material costs, shipping, profit & loss, balance sheet, categories and their inclusions. But for the first year of this business I simply had a cashflow spreadsheet plus a pricing spreadsheet.

We have something new and exciting for Handmade Canberra stallholders. After being so impressed by the quality of gorgeous stall displays at our 11 June market, we would like to introduce a Styling Award, in recognition of the extra effort and gorgeousness put in to make Handmade stalls so utterly stunning.

Nominees for this Styling Award (which will be presented after each market) will not necessarily be for the biggest and most fandangled ideas. It will be for any designer who has thought outside the square when it comes to creative ways to display their market goods.

Nominees will be chosen for showing creativity, innovation and cleverness. Of course, beauty and style go without saying, but we're also looking for really interesting ways stallholders manage to catch their customer's eye - and quite simply - make their product look good.

I must say, choosing five nominees was VERY hard - there were so many stunning stalls at this market - my honourable mention list would be as long as the market queues! But choose I must - and so... for our inaugural Styling Award, we are thrilled to announce the following five nominees:
