Designer Interview

Canberra based designer & creator of
Gillian Worrall

When did you know you wanted to be a designer?
Right out of college - it was the hardest course to get into
because it needed an INTERVIEW, in Melbourne too,
which was excitement plus!

How would you describe your design style?
It's more of an approach than a style.
I can create in many styles but my approach is generally the same.

I like things that make people laugh and things that are
beautiful in sentiment without being saccharine.
I am no Pollyanna but I like to look on the bright side.

What creative people, things or materials inspire your designs?
I love illustration. I don't get to do much of it unfortunately.
Illustrations from the 1950s and 1960s really float my boat.
Miroslav Sasek is from that era, he's great.

How does a typical day of work for you go?
Flat out. The days disappear before my eyes.
I never get as much done as I want to.
I am a freelance designer as well, so there is always plenty to juggle.

What is your process when creating a new design?
Have a bit of a think about an image, do a couple of options.
Flash it around and see who laughs at what.
Lately it seems to be to scribble it on a bit of paper
and put it in the big pile of things to get to later!

What would you like people to enjoy most about your designs?
Just having a bit of a laugh.
Taking things too seriously is bad for your health.

What makes your designs unique?
The simple fact I did them makes them at least a bit different
(I hope!)

What is your advice to aspiring designers?
I'd love to say follow your dream and just GO FOR IT.
However I am a realist and tend to go more,
"Follow your dream but don't bankrupt yourself to do it"
"Have fun working hard" is also good advice.
I am doing my best when work is more fun than fun.

What designs will you be selling at the Handmade Christmas Market?
Heaps of big and little badges, fridge magnets and cards.
Great for stocking fillers and to inject a bit of fun into the season.
There will be a good selection of general greeting cards plus
LOTS OF CHRISTMAS CARDS.
Pop in and say 'hi' everyone, there will be heaps of fun to be had!

Find the fun & facetious Look Mama at the
Handmade Market Saturday the 8th & Sunday the 9th of December
National Convention Centre, Canberra from 10am-4pm
