Designer Interview

Sydney based designer & creator of
REDBERRY DESIGN
Jacqueline Wallace
When did you know you wanted to be a designer?
I went straight from High School to complete a degree in
Industrial Design, purely on my Mum’s request as I was
very creative as a child and through school. Thank
goodness Mum talked me into doing it!

How would you describe your design style?
I would say a presence of simple neutral Scandinavian feel
with splashes of bright colour here and there giving
interest and personality.

What creative people, things or materials inspire your designs?
Interiors and furniture design is where I tend to draw my inspiration
from. I love to look at interior spaces from around the world and
try to create items that would work in these spaces.

How does a typical day of work for you go?
Depending on what day it is as I head up the design department
at the KvB Institute of Design most days. But when I am lucky enough
to have a studio day for Redberry I spend it making the lamps, folding
cranes, stringing up mobiles, and designing new patterns to be used
on the lamp shades and paper. These are the days I love and look
forward to, even though my studio tends to turn into a
shamozzle on those days it's very much worth it!

What is your process when creating a new design?
There generally isn't really a process as most times the ideas come
to me when I'm not searching for them, rather when I am in a bit of a
day dream or on a sunny Sunday afternoon when I'm on the deck with
a cuppa. Once I think of something to create though, it's on!
I get very determined to make it happen and won't stop until I experiment,
test and develop the little project until I am happy with the end result.
I then often let the new design sit for a week or two and think about
it before I decide to produce it to sell or put it on my website.
It's part of my process I guess as I tend to get a little to enthusiastic initially
and then need to let the design sit to see if it was a good idea in the
first place. Yes, strange, but I can't seem to shake the process.

What would you like people to enjoy most about your designs?
The fact that they are all hand made here in Aus and that my designs
are quite different and unique. The colour palettes I use tend to always
make people smile when they come to my stand at the Handmade
Market so hopefully that brings some kind of joy to people.

What makes your designs unique?
I get lots of feedback from people who buy my designs who say
that they love that not many other people have the same as what they
have bought from me which is nice for them I think.

What is your advice to aspiring designers?
If you want to get into creating something to sell make sure you enjoy
making it as if it takes off you really don't want what you are producing
to turn from enjoyment into a task.
If you can somehow manage that then you have it made!

What designs will you be selling at the Handmade September Market?
I have some new lamp designs that I will have at Handmade along
with our ever popular Candles Holders and Origami Mobiles.

Find the simple & sunny styling of Redberry Design at the
Handmade Market Saturday the 29th & Sunday the 30th of September
