Small Business Summit and Expo Wrap Up


Handmade Canberra's inaugural Small Business Summit and Expo was held at the National Convention Centre yesterday, with an enthusiastic crowd ready to immerse themselves in some fine corporate and motivational speaking.

Delegates arrived early to register and mingle with cups of tea and coffee to warm up from Canberra's biting cold.


There was many a peruse at our Handmade Living table, too.

Nick Foley, Landor Associates Australia
The summit commenced with first speaker Nick Foley of Landor Associates Australia. Nick engaged the crowd with his fascinating insights on branding and marketing.

With over 15 years experience in the marketing industry Nick has a comprehensive understanding of what it takes to create engaging and distinctive brands. He has a keen interest in brand innovation as well as the repositioning of mature brands. Landor has 20 offices around the world specialising in brand consulting and design. Some of Landor’s current clients include; Citibank, Nestle, Proctor & Gamble, Barclays, Diageo, Campbells and Microsoft. Landor is part of the Y&R network in Australia with its local office in located in Sydney.




Following Nick was Dena Vasallo of PPR. Dena spoke on digital and social media, and how to make it work for any small business. Pens scribbled furiously as Dena spoke.

Dena’s experience includes brand building campaigns, social/digital media, guerilla/buzz marketing, strategic media relations, branded entertainment, issues management, celebrity and influencer seeding. She is currently PPR’s National Digital Director and General Manager of South Australia and Victoria. She represents key clients such as The Royal Institution of Australia, Hills Industries, Officeworks, and more.

A break for morning tea meant loads of networking, buying a few copies of Handmade Living, and the chance to meet presenters Justin Herald and Debra Templar. Delegates also had the opportunity to visit the expo stalls and chat with a series of professionals offering some amazing services for small business enterprises.

After some delectable refreshments, delegates moved back to the theatrette for some serious small business start-up advice from Justin Herald, who had the crowd in fits of laughter. Justin promised no 'Oprah a-ha moments' but boy did we get a stack of Justin a-ha moments.

Justin spoke on growing your business for free using social networking, free media publicity and protecting your Intellectual Property. A rising star in the fields of business and personal development, Justin, at the age of 25 and with only $50 to his name, set about changing the course of his life. He created Attitude Inc, a clothing brand that became an international licensing success that turned over in excess of $20 million per year.

Handmade Canberra was thrilled to welcome keynote speaker and truly dynamic woman, Debra Templar of The Templar Group, who made a lunch-time presentation on retail selling, customer service and merchandising.

Debra is one of Australia’s leading retail enthusiasts, keynote speakers and business coaches. She has an abundance of retail experience, including sales, management, merchandising, customer service and  much more. She is a regular contributor to Australian Business Solutions, StartUp Smart Daily, and Greenworld.

After lunch, delegates enjoyed the opportunity to mingle with the Expo talent, then enjoy an enlightening panel discussion on IP and what it means in 2011.

Joining the former presenters on the panel were Anna Pino from Lighthouse Innovation Centre and David Mathews from Crystal Approach.

Anna has spent much of the last 20 years involved in every aspect of starting up, growing and selling a business. For the last few years, she has been involved in the management and restructure of a speciality retail business, and has developed a number of training products relating to intellectual property. She has consulted with businesses either starting out or trying to re-establish their market position.

David Mathews has over 25 years experience in the public and private sectors. David has a keen interest in fostering new businesses in Canberra. For the Canberra Business Council, he managed the transition of Canberra BusinessPoint, an ACT government program providing practical advice and support for existing businesses and those intending to start a business in Canberra. He has also presented a practical guide to starting a business at a range of business forums.
