Meet the designer - Made by Jack

1. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

We are twin sisters, Ali and Megan Jackson. Together we run made by jack.

We grew up in Sydney and both moved to Canberra in 2004 to study Gold and Silversmithing and Textiles respectively.

2. Can you tell us about what it is you design and the mediums you use to create them?

We design and make a range of contemporary jewellery and homeware products. Each piece is designed and entirely handmade ourselves in our Canberra studios.

Our high quality wearable jewellery pieces include necklaces, earrings, brooches, armbands and cufflinks. Predominately made from sterling silver, we also use non traditional materials such as anodised aluminium, steel and plastics.

Our textile and homeware range is entirely designed and hand printed by us. We use cotton and linen and individually mix all our printing inks.

3. What is it that inspires you in this process?

We both love developing our ideas (and the challenges that go along with this) to produce a unique handmade design.

4. Tell us about your business name and how long you have been designing?

made by jack came about as we wanted a name which united our two practices yet still allowed us to continue development within our own practices.

We both graduated with honours in 2008 and set up our own studios. We work separately in our own studios and utilise the opportunity of markets to come together as made by jack where textiles and jewellery can sit complimentary side by side.

5. Can you share any tips about starting a small business or being a designer?

Passion. Common sense. Hard work… and lots of it! But most of all if it’s what you want… jump in and do it!

Take every opportunity you can – advice, skills and support from other established designers are invaluable.

6. What do you like most about being a Handmade Canberra Designer?

Canberra has a great supportive art and design community, particularly for emerging designers.

7. Besides you, who is your favourite Handmade designer?

Klei - absolutely amazing work and lovely people!!!
